Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love

Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule. ~ Buddha

In the last post, I reblogged about the war going on in the middle east between Palestine and Israel. After writing that post, I came across this quote and so I thought I would share because it directly applies to that post and to that ongoing war.

How many times in history has hatred or violence brought peace. Never! There are cases where on the surface it may have appeared that this occurred. For example, did the atom bomb being dropped on Japan in World War II bring peace. Well it did bring an end to the war, but did it bring peace? I would argue that it did not.

What it did bring was suffering and death to thousands of human lives. It brought a battle between superpowers holding the buttons to even more destructive weapons constantly one upping one another to see who could hold enough weapons to destroy the world more times over than the other. This struggle continues even today.

I would not call this peace. It brought an end to a war, but brought the danger of annihilation to all generations that followed.

You cannot hate someone into stop hating you. You can’t attack someone in the hopes of getting them to be on your side. Only by taking the higher road of love can you stop the cycle of hate.

  1. I completely agree with you there. Even though world powers might not believe in ‘love conquers hate’, we should keep broader minds open. Negativity in answer to hate will only cause more problems rather than solve any. And humans become casualties along the way. Its not fair.
